第113頁。致曾國藩，第一札。按，書中言及曾氏“謁聖林，登泰岱”事。查《曾文正公年譜》，同治五年二月十六日，至曲阜；四月十六日，登岱嶽，上至天柱峰。又書末署日“五月廿五日”。據此可知此書作于同治五年五月廿五日。以下三札，經編者考訂，作于咸豐九至十一年間；然則，第一札當移作第四札，方符編年排月之意。
第115頁第七至八行。大賢舉動，迴絕時流。
按當作：大賢舉動，迥絕時流。
第116頁第十行。息彭蠡之驚波，遇豫氛之旁逸。

按當作張裕釗。又第135頁注[32]張裕劍：武昌人，字廉卿。亦誤。惟既知廉卿為字，何不知裕釗其名？竊謂此系手民誤植，非編者之咎。

按依編例，逢人名即出注，此二字亦當注明。竊謂此人即汪梅村士鐸。
第128頁第七行。性龍、碧湄。
按當出注，分別為尹杏農耕雲、高碧湄心夔。
同上頁第十一行。既老且貧，倚斟讎為海。
按海字不可解，疑當作活。
第132頁。致佚名第三札。
揆其文意，按諸史事，此函作者非莫友芝，應為胡林翼。書中云太平軍陷黃州，請假一月在營調理，俱系咸豐十一年胡林翼事。收信人“襲雲”，當為俞奎垣（字襲芸），其時為湖北學政。書中敬稱“文節”，又云“沔上環琦盡入珊網”，可證。
第133頁。致佚名第五札。
此為胡林翼與顏相廷書，按諸事實，當系于咸豐十一年。參觀《胡林翼集•書牘》是年三月二日與顏書。
同上頁。致佚名第七札。
按此亦為胡林翼與人書。作書時間與上二札略為先後。
又。上述三札俱為胡林翼與人書，而“均錄自上海圖書館所藏（莫友芝）原件”（整理者按語），所以然者，竊謂不外乎兩端：一則友芝代擬函稿，存檔留底者；一則林翼手書，而友芝追緬故人，藏作紀念者。

There was gold in it and train-oil in it and other things that paid—but the Duc de Mersch was not thinking of that. He was first and foremost a State Founder, or at least he was that after being titular ruler of some little spot of a Teutonic grand-duchy. No one of the great powers would let any other of the great powers possess the country, so it had been handed over to the Duc de Mersch, who had at heart, said Cal, the glorious vision of founding a model state—the model state, in which washed and broadclothed Esquimaux would live, side by side, regenerated lives, enfranchised equals of choicely selected younger sons of whatever occidental race. It was that sort of thing. I was even a little overpowered, in spite of the fact that Callan was its trumpeter; there was something fine about the conception and Churchill’s acquiescence seemed to guarantee an honesty in its execution.
