李 将 军
咸丰十一年春，有一位将军，忙里偷闲，去皖山（在今安徽潜山县境内）接受了一次“拓展训练”。他的任务是攀上皖山主峰——天柱峰。此峰海拔1488米，“一石浑成”，挺拔削立。在没有磴道、缆车的时代，他能利用的工具不过是竹竿和绳子。当然，既是“训练”，自有老师辅导他；老师贺良谋，系潜山土著，是登山高手。竹竿和绳子，也是贺老师为他准备的。竹竿长约二十米，巨则巨矣，在黄河以南倒不算稀见。两条绳子比较神奇，“以淡黄细草为之，如汲绠而略纤，长十丈许，滑润不龟手，真灵物也”。然而，仅用一竹二绳，就能登上“平直如砥，光泽如蜡”的绝壁？
天柱峰西北隅有石壁，略分四级，每级不过三十米，逐级而上，遂至顶峰。方法是，先将一条绳子缠在竿头，再将竹竿竖起，卡在石缝中；贺老师在腰间缠住另一条绳，攥住垂下的竿头绳，缘壁而上，及顶，则将竿头绳系在石顶小树上，以便将竹竿牵引上石。待老师料理妥当，将军亦将绳子缠在腰间，援壁而上。如此，重复四次，即能登顶。
只是，谈何容易。真攀爬起来，即使是以前登过恒山、崂山与华山的将军，对此奇险，也是“意颇窘”。贺老师教他别害怕，并授秘诀：“用双手牢握垂绳，伸直两骽（腿）抵石壁上，凝心定气，把这石壁当作平地看，屈身作扫地形，须要手足相应，手进一握，足进一踏，初觉艰涩，十步外即不难矣。要紧在足心贴石，膝盖放平，膝平骽自直，开步自易，若稍一跧屈，则头额烂矣”；这段话要总结，就是一个“绷”字。绷紧了，则人与绳与壁成为一个三角形；今日地球人都知道，三角形是世间最稳固的形状。将军依计而行，兼之贺老师不时“从上提挈之”，果然，先难後易，没花多长时间就登上了第一级。如此，重复四次，即登上了天柱峰。
登顶後，看一回状如烛焰的巨石，将军向老师问起传说中的“天池”。所谓“天池”，也就是高处的池子，天最高，故名天池。吾国高山似皆有天池，天柱峰不能例外。而且，平素安徽官员祈雨，都请贺老师登顶从天池取回“天水”，方有灵验。乍听将军问天池，老师笑了，指着一块石头，说，这就是。将军一看，不过是“石中略凹，仅如砚受墨处”，与想象中的天池大相庭径。再问，“天水”呢？老师哈哈大笑，说，那有什么“天水”！“往昔取水，皆我以竹筒盛水携上，倾水凹处，复掬入筒中耳”。将军闻言，相视而笑。
下山後，将军写了四个大字：“孤立擎霄”，请贺老师刻在山崖，直到今天，游客仍可欣赏他的法书。又写了一篇《天柱刊崖记》，纪念这次壮举。此後，他又参加了镇压西北回民起义的战役，再後，去到新疆，官至布伦托海办事大臣，兼署伊犁将军，赫然二品大员矣。惜未能善终，“晚年生计窘甚”，中风瘫痪，死在那一年，也没人知晓。
当将军还是一个青年，他从故乡来到湖南，拜会守丧在家的曾国藩，适逢主人不在家，其子纪泽接待了他。其时，年未弱冠的纪泽尚不谙外交礼节，看到一个徒步而来身汗身水讲一口普通话的人说要与他父亲商讨军国大事，不禁起疑，乃以对“役夫”的规格接待将军。将军“怒”，未多言语，打到他仆街（“捶子仆地”）。国藩归，立向将军谢罪，“留宿焉”，并畅谈数日。将军终不喜国藩，转回湖北，投奔了胡林翼。登天柱峰，就是他在鄂军时的事迹。
将军姓李，名雲麟，字雨苍，汉军正蓝旗人，世居盘山（在今天津蓟县），所谓“盘山李氏”也。
