庞青雲“得胜还朝”，由“军机处的陈公”领他入宫拜见太后，路上，陈云：“从宫门外走到这儿需要多久啊？年轻时，我头一次站在宫门外还是这么想。可等真的走到这儿，已经两鬓斑白，用了整整三十年，可惜啊，走不动啦”。此语略有感慨，或令观众低徊。只是，这话却不合实情。先不说陈公年轻时倘能考中进士，获得廷试资格，肯定会在保和殿答卷（自嘉庆朝，清代廷试多在保和殿举行），已经算是“走到这儿”，不必傻傻的“站在宫门外”；即使他不是科举正途出身，只说他入值军机处以前，必也曾逐级升官，入宫搞过几回“陛见”，肯定也不止一次“走到这儿”。因此，“走到这儿”有什么稀奇呢？真把庞将军当乡下人啊。
更逗的是，青雲作为克复南京的第一功臣，入宫“面圣”，给他领路的决非陈公这样的军机大臣。清代制度规定，外省高官来见皇帝，俱由亲王、驸马之类的亲贵领路，一般大臣是没有资格的。“在内廷行走”的亲贵与“在军机处行走”的大臣，是两拨人，切不可走错了。若胡乱“走到这儿”，陈公必被侍卫拿下，来不及与庞将军闲话生平矣。
再说入宫後。剧中用俯拍的方式介绍了一位皇太后，太后并唤了一声“小李子”；据此猜测，应指慈禧太后与李连英（俗多作“莲英”，误）。然而，克复南京在同治三年，其时，接见大臣不止一位太后，而应是两位太后与一位小皇帝才是——除了慈禧，还有慈安太后（清文宗皇后）及清穆宗。而且，当日是“垂帘听政”的局面，两太后并坐帘後，文武百官不能看清她姐俩儿的“圣颜”。剧中未在太后座前设立黄幔（即“帘”），可算大大的“失礼”。至于李连英，这会儿还轮不到他在御前侍奉，因为他才十六岁，暂未得宠。非要让慈禧在此时唤出一位太监，那么，她应该叫一声“安仔”（即安德海）才对。
不过，修正这些情节毫无必要。因为，克复南京的第一功臣曾国藩入宫“陛见”，根本不是这个排场。同治七年十二月十四日上午十点，由一等镇国将军奕山（近代史上丧权辱国的《中俄爱珲条约》即由他签订）带领，国藩进入养心殿东间，首次拜见两宫太后与小皇帝。养心殿是一座偏殿，在军机处北面，是晚清帝后接见大臣最常用的处所。剧中的太和殿，则是用于举办盛大仪式的正殿，并不常启。国藩入门，即跪奏：“臣曾国藩恭请圣安”；旋即“免冠叩头”（剧中青雲叩首还戴着帽子，不合规矩），又奏：“臣曾国藩叩谢天恩”；然後起立，往前走幾步，跪于事先准备好的软垫，静候问话。当时，小皇帝坐东边，座後设黄幔，後边即是两位太后。一般来说，小皇帝与慈安不怎么说话，唱主角的是慈禧。慈禧问他第一句话：“你在江南，事都办完了？”答：“办完了”。再问：“勇都撤完了？”答：“都撤完了”。问：“撤得安静？”答：“安静”。问：“你一路来可安静？”答：“路上很安静”。接下来，就叙家常，展望未来，如离京多少年了，家中幾兄弟，此後在直隶总督任上有何打算，云云。
至于青雲的原型马新贻首次见到帝后，则在同治七年五月十七日。其时，四十八岁的他由浙江巡抚升任闽浙总督，入京“请训”，三十三岁的慈禧似对他印象甚好，接见後，不等他至福州赴任，即调任两江总督（封疆之职，以直隶、两江最为重要）。可惜，他未留下笔录，我们无从知道他和慈禧说了些什么。惟可断定的是，他不会谈到剧中所谓“免除江苏辖区三年赋税”之事，因为，如此繁重的事体必经京内京外一番商讨才有结果，慈禧再怎么“天纵圣明”，也不可能片言而决。
