去年初，我为湖南教育电视台录制了一部电视讲座，名为《湘军传奇》。其时，无讲稿，仅列提纲，每日独对摄像机，讲上两个钟头，一连录了一个多月，方告毕役。说这些，不是为了显摆什么胸有成竹，而是老实交待，由于时间不够与精力不济，此次讲座准备的并非十分充分；同时，也让我有机会向电视台领导尤其是制片人田思思女士表达我的谢意，谢谢他们的大度与信任。然而，准备不充分，讲的也磕巴，并不意味这个讲座不是一个好的电视节目。经过精心的後期制作——串词、剪辑、画面与音乐，讲座的播出，相对于讲座的录制，简直有脱胎换骨的区别。巧妇固不能为无米之炊，然而，只要有一些稍能入咽的材料，巧妇必能因难见巧，做出一桌可口的饭菜。
节目完成，再蒙出版家尚红科先生的美意，希望我能将讲座内容整理成书。讲座的主题是湘军——严格的说，指自创建至克复南京期间的湘军——此系鄙人关心有年的题目，窃谓积力既久，不无一得之愚，以此，虽非巧妇，我也硬着头皮，割肉择菜，炖炒烹炸，期于不辱使命。既为讲座，形成文字，自然极端的口语化。口语化，有利有弊。其利在于易解，其弊在于辞费。我所做的，就是尽量将故事脉络保存完整，而删除太过拖沓重复的部分，同时，对措辞造句稍加润饰，以便阅读。加上黄海龙先生的细心编辑，此书终于成形。然而，这份工打得如何，尚祈读者评判。
