曾文正公的难言之隐

自三十馀岁起，曾国藩“遍身癣毒”发作，痛痒难耐；此疾于少年时代即现端倪，这次全面爆发。此后，癣疾不时发作，尤以事务繁忙时发作得最为厉害。小资作家张潮说：“痛可忍而痒不可忍”；曾国藩对这句话的体会必较常人深刻得多。据通行说法，曾氏此疾当定案为牛皮藓；其实不然。
同治三年秋，刚刚收复南京，曾国藩即奉命北上剿捻。同时，他还要主持裁撤湘军的工作，时刻担心退伍兵勇因欠饷而发动叛乱。更恼火的是，对于幼天王的下落，左宗棠与他各执一词，在私函公牍中连连发难，搞得他意绪大恶。身心俱疲之际，癣疾应时大作，他给曾国荃写信通报病状：“湿毒更炽，遍身发烧”，而接下来的一句话，则令读者瞠目结舌：“余于（道光）二十六年秋亦遍身发烧，医者皆言是杨梅疮毒气发作；余不敢服攻伐猛剂，吴竹如劝每日服槐花一碗，亦无寸效”。如此说来，曾国藩竟得了梅毒？
钱锺书借方鸿渐之口，说鸦片和梅毒“都是明朝所收的西洋文明”。其实，元代和尚继洪《岭南卫生方》中已有“治梅毒疮方”，并谓梅毒原名“木棉疔”或“天皰疮”；钱先生于此不免小眚。回头再说曾氏的“杨梅疮”。“医者皆言”云云，似未确诊为梅毒。他且不敢服用专治梅毒的“攻伐猛剂”，如牡蛎散、五宝丹之类——明末名医陈司成治疗梅毒，将“矾石（即砷）、云母石、硝石”等烧制而成“生生乳”，即为避免“轻粉（砷）内服”而产生“水银中毒”（《霉疮秘录》）；曾氏所见与之略同——似更证明他的癣症并非梅毒。不过，“日服槐花一碗”，又透露出一点消息。据医学名著《景岳全书》之《新方八证》介绍，槐花炒制成炭，可用来治杨梅疮；然则，国藩虽拒“猛剂”，而所服槐花，仍是用于治疗梅毒。如此说来，曾国藩真得了梅毒！
李时珍斩钉截铁的说：梅毒“皆淫邪之人病之”。曾文正公是人间楷模，竟厕身 “淫邪”之列，这可怎么办？思来想去，我为曾公找了一条“厕遁”的解法：“先患疮之人，在于客厕之后，其毒气尚浮于厕之中，人不知，偶犯其毒气，熏入孔中，渐至脏腑”（窦梦麟《疮疡经验全书》）。其实，还有一种解法，更能令曾公脱离“淫邪”之嫌，不过我不敢用，因为，那种解法将梅毒归咎为“父母胎中之毒”（前引窦书），我怕曾公怒其辱及父母而自九泉之下来找我的麻烦。
