王闿运之一声叹息

福州诗评家陈衍对清末民初人物作过一番品题——差不多都是刻薄话，难得找见几句好话——他的弟子钱鍾书将其完整记录下来，印成一本小册子，题为《石语》。其中，湘潭王闿运逝世后，上海某报刊出的恶作剧式挽联：“学富文中子，形同武大郎”；尤为陈衍所津津乐道。
闿运个头不高，故有“武大郎”的比拟；“文中子”是隋朝人王通的弟子给老师私拟的谥号。王通平生以“圣人”自命，模仿孔子，作了六部“经”书，称《续六经》。比照通常的价值观，王通是个妄人，武大郎是个丑角，那么，闿运的特点竟在妄、丑二字上？
个不高是天生的，矮则矮矣，丑从何来？而上联寓意的妄字，似能说中闿运的几分神采。
闿运之妄，如何？曰：彼之妄，在念念不忘作“帝王师”。
论级别，皇帝的老师在官阶中算最高一级，属“三公”之列，称“太师”。但是，终其一生，闿运连进士都未考中，一般的座师、房师他都做不了，他竟要做太师！难怪在他还没翘辫子的时候，就有人编排了一段故事来腻味他：
话说闿运做客两江总督府，曾国藩听他畅论天下大势。闿运认为平定太平天国后，曾氏亟应利用因此获得的天下重望，麾军北上，推翻满清。国藩闻此，一语不发，径直端茶送客。后来，收拾桌椅的下人发现，满桌都是曾大帅用手指蘸着茶水写下的“妄人”二字。
只是，根据时间、地点及人物行踪这些要素来核察，我们很容易发现这个故事是假的。不过，故事里的重要细节——劝曾国藩麾师北上, 竟似确有其事。咸丰十一年，皇帝驾崩，遗命肃顺等八人为顾命大臣，辅佐幼帝同治。皇太后慈禧则暗中勾结恭亲王，密谋发动政变。闿运为肃顺座上客———肃顺幕府中有“湖南六子”，闿运是其中最年轻、最有想像力的人, 闻到政变的气味，赶紧致书国藩，希望他以柱国重臣的身份，带兵到北京“入觐”，支持恭亲王配合顾命八大臣共同辅佐幼帝同治，同时“声明祖制”（妇人不得干政），以粉碎慈禧垂帘听政的阴谋。这不就是“麾师北上”搞兵谏么？
但是，国藩一生谨慎，这会儿正担心自己“功名太盛”，生怕惹上“权臣干政”的嫌疑，故未采纳闿运的意见。果然，两个月后，慈禧政变成功，肃顺等人全军覆灭，闿运不禁“太息痛恨于其言之不用也”。
肃顺是咸丰朝的权臣，他对咸丰帝具有很大的影响力，若成功顾命，对幼帝同治亦必具有同等甚至更强的影响力。肃顺极为看重闿运，闿运献言建策，必能间接影响到同治帝。那么，打一点折扣，他也算是个“帝王师”了。最终，曾氏的谨慎扰乱了闿运的好局，他怎不“太息痛恨”呢？
一心要作帝王师，却只以文学大师的身份进入历史，以故临死，闿运都未能释怀。他写了副自挽联，再次太息，语曰：“纵横计不就，空留余咏满江山”。
