第113頁。致曾國藩，第一札。按，書中言及曾氏“謁聖林，登泰岱”事。查《曾文正公年譜》，同治五年二月十六日，至曲阜；四月十六日，登岱嶽，上至天柱峰。又書末署日“五月廿五日”。據此可知此書作于同治五年五月廿五日。以下三札，經編者考訂，作于咸豐九至十一年間；然則，第一札當移作第四札，方符編年排月之意。

按海字不可解，疑當作活。
第132頁。致佚名第三札。
揆其文意，按諸史事，此函作者非莫友芝，應為胡林翼。書中云太平軍陷黃州，請假一月在營調理，俱系咸豐十一年胡林翼事。收信人“襲雲”，當為俞奎垣（字襲芸），其時為湖北學政。書中敬稱“文節”，又云“沔上環琦盡入珊網”，可證。
第133頁。致佚名第五札。
此為胡林翼與顏相廷書，按諸事實，當系于咸豐十一年。參觀《胡林翼集•書牘》是年三月二日與顏書。
同上頁。致佚名第七札。
按此亦為胡林翼與人書。作書時間與上二札略為先後。
又。上述三札俱為胡林翼與人書，而“均錄自上海圖書館所藏（莫友芝）原件”（整理者按語），所以然者，竊謂不外乎兩端：一則友芝代擬函稿，存檔留底者；一則林翼手書，而友芝追緬故人，藏作紀念者。
