樊增祥对联
释文：
抱冰师尝书此联，仿之：
金管纪德，银管纪功，斑竹管纪文，隆吾门望；
奇花在庭，奇书在手，奇山水在目，适我性情。
八旬翁樊山樊增祥。
按：抱冰，张之洞号。增祥是之洞弟子，此联即因追念师门恩遇而作。
邓镕《附赠樊樊山先生诗》：“生平恩怨两文襄”；自注：“樊为南皮张文襄高足弟子；又以家怨（即谓樊燮案），不慊于湘阴左文襄。故樊文如‘持桓公之喜怒，惟有王珣’，诗如‘卧龙巾扇到今疑’，诸语皆刺左也”（《荃察馀斋诗存》）。
左宗棠、张之洞死后赐谥，皆是“文襄”；之洞有恩于增祥，宗棠则骂樊父为“忘八蛋”，故邓诗云“恩怨两文襄”也。
注中所引增祥之文，盖以王珣拟宗棠。王珣，晋人，丞相王导之孙，尝与郗超同在大司马桓温幕府，王珣为主簿，郗超任参军，俱得桓温信用，时人遂云：“髯参军，短主簿，能令公喜，能令公怒”。郗超胡子长，故曰“髯参军”，王珣个头小，故曰“短主簿”（《晋书》）。宗棠体貌，实兼有“髯”、“短”的特点，然男子多髯是所谓“美风姿”，身材矮小则为人讥笑，增祥拈出“短”字形容宗棠，意在“刺左”，不待言矣。“持桓公之喜怒”，即谓宗棠在湖南巡抚骆秉章幕中，专权自恣，“能令公喜，能令公怒”也。但是，增祥自己就是一个矮子，其赠胡延诗，便有“髯、短俱为入幕宾”（二人曾入荣禄幕府）之句，“髯”谓胡延，“短”则自况，然则增祥固未以“短主簿”为贬词。可见，诗人作月旦评，出言太易，立场多变，读者切勿执著呆看，庶幾不为所欺。
“卧龙巾扇”句，则因宗棠自号“今亮”、“老亮”，以诸葛亮再生自诩，增祥不以为然，乃“疑”之。其实，宗棠的才略功绩，昭昭在人耳目，实无可疑。于不疑处有疑，对学者来说，或是一种优点，对文人来说，则往往不过是于事无征、想当然尔的偏见，甚至沦为翻案、泄愤的手段。读者遇到此等文字，又不可不多个心眼。
