省长、山长与队长
对近代长沙乃至湖南全省的风化事业的介绍，今人习见者，仍是那几篇出自各级政协所办文史刊物的文章，俱已收入《近代中国娼妓史料》（河北人民出版社，1997）。这些文章，大多以批判的态度与谴责的笔调，描绘在腐败的反革命政府与邪恶的帝国主义侵略者的双重压迫下，劳动人民，尤其是女性劳动人民——也包括少数男性劳动人民——是如何受到饥寒的驱使，被迫走上卖淫的道路，而万恶的统治阶级——也包括一部分被统治阶级——又是如何放纵自己的欲望，将一己的快乐建筑在他人的痛苦之上。认真学习了这些痛深创巨的故乡惨史，吾湘读书人悲从中来，往往废书而叹：除了民国时期（诸文叙事多以1911—1949为限），此前此後，还有什么确实详尽的史料，可供批判？
在这个问题上，史料就像中年男胖子的乳沟，挤一挤，总会有的。以鄙人所知，要找民国以後的史料，不妨去百度网站谷歌一下，你知道得太多了；要找民国以前的，则请埋头于故纸堆。上网易，翻旧书不易，鄙人自告奋勇，请为其难。
清代道光朝以前，在湖南寻风觅月不是一件容易的事，所谓“楚南风气僻陋，远不逮吴越燕赵”。主要原因，是经济不发达，至于具体论证经济发达与淫业昌盛之关系，从略，领会精神即可。直到1830年代，省城才有歌妓，且行事诡秘，可以“暗爽”二字形容：官人或商人招待宾客，请来歌姬陪酒，设宴于“重檐秘室”，待至酒酣耳热，歌声觞令穿墙而出，惊动邻居，无不“诧为仅见”。那个年代，没吃过猪肉也没见过猪跑的人，真不少。要再过十馀年，随着以万贡珍为代表的高级官员来长沙任职，“提唱风雅”，时常举办“文酒笙歌之会”，才真正书写了湖南风化史的崭新一叶。
万贡珍（1796-），江苏宜兴人，1843年任湖南布政使（相当于今日的副省长）。他在任内屡被参奏，皇帝（宣宗）却不为所动，极力袒护他，直到咸丰元年八月，换了个皇帝（文宗），他才被革职。贡珍曾三次代理巡抚（相当于代省长）。一省之长，年甫知命，自有人为他安排“乌纱红粉”的搭档，这个搭档就是当时“烟花队里”的队长——十七岁的桂龄。相好的证据，是一副曾经悬挂于观音寺（遗址在今芙蓉区玉泉街）的楹联：十七载风尘辛苦，我独何辜，剧怜莲性虽胎，难堪是檀板清樽，千呼万唤；五百年香火姻缘，身将谁託，漫道藕丝自缚，只愿得慈雲甘露，并蒂连枝。此联题桂龄之名，代笔者是贡珍。其时，常与万、桂厮混在一起的，是省城教育界的名人——丁善庆（1790—1869）。善庆是高干子弟——他的外公刘权之仕至宰相（清代管部大学士俗称宰相），也是少年成名的大学者，并于1846—67年间任岳麓书院山长，掌教年数仅次于罗典与欧阳厚均。
