孟森的史学
孟森是清史研究的开山祖师，尤以率先发掘满洲入关之前的史事真相，成果最丰，享誉最甚。然在以史学名世之前，孟森为众所知的却是另外几种身份。
光绪末年，他随郑孝胥去广西龙州，以幕客的身份协助郑氏组练新军。此后，由郑氏资助，他去了日本，就读于东京法政大学，专修法律。民国初年，他进入政界，成为众议院议员和国会宪法起草委员会委员；其间，他主持制定了“民国以来通行之商法”。同时，虽已陆续发表史学文章，他仍对政治与商业保有浓厚的兴趣。他与状元实业家张謇交谊甚厚，“生平喜谈实业，即系受其影响”；而直到1928年，年届花甲，他还应江苏省长钮永建之聘，襄赞政事，“多所建白”。真能心无旁骛，一力著书，这要等他任教北京大学之后(1931-1938年)，当代名史家郑天挺概论孟森这段时期的治学，说：“七年之间，成书数百万言，盖远迈于旧日之所作，有功于学术亦最宏”。如此算来，作为史学家的孟森，全心全力投入史学研究的时间，实在不算多(不过一生光阴的十分之一)；岂止不多，简直少得可怜(在京期间还需教课，研究时间又打了折扣)。
但是，若云某人仅“消费”十分之一的生命，便能在史学上获得如此的煌煌佳绩，谁敢相信？那么，要解释此一现象，或不能单用“量化分析”的机械方法，而应运用“长时段的眼光”加以考察。
今日尚未有人写出详细的传记，但可想见，孟森的读书生活必定是充实而有效率的。首先，他在少年，便从“里中名师”受学，除了“制艺应举”的书，对“学术、事功、文章、经济”之学也颇为留心。传统读书人该下的工夫，他已具备，此可谓充实。其次，他在国外接受现代教育，成效亦可观。留学期间及此后，他编、译《日本陆军学校章程汇编》、《商法调查案理由书》、《地方自治浅说》等“新学”书籍，学能致用，有裨世道，可谓有效率。此种经历看似与史学没有紧密的关系，实则因此养成的知识之广度与见解之深度，最有助于史学人才之成长。设若没有这种新、旧兼蓄的基础，孟森就不可能从制度、文化层面对历史进行洞彻的解读。譬如，他考正八旗制度，认为初期的“共主”与西史所谓“联邦制”有本质上的相同之处，实为清国崛起时的“国体”，而不仅仅是部落社会的军事或户籍制度，即为明证。仅有传统的“朴学”工夫，或能简择编排清初史料，但要从政治层面解读这些史料，非有另外一种眼光不可。这种眼光，光凭浸淫于传统的经史之学，株守于华夷之辨，是怎么也培养不出来的。
除了读书，若不能行万里路，亦不足成就孟森。行路，一是地理意义，一是心理意义。略考孟森足履所经，东至日本，北至哈尔滨，南至粤疆，西边大概来不及去，但西边的事情也是他素所究心，看他为屠寄撰《蒙兀儿史记》所作的序，看他的《香妃考实》、《赵豁四传》，便能见出一二。心路历程，则与他的从政生涯有关。孟森史学的主要范畴，是政治史与制度史。二者之真髓，不在条文，而在条文背后隐藏的人心；欲探知隐藏的人心，则不能不有实际的体会。“旧史家”治史，在今人看来，有诸多不满人意的地方，但也有得天独厚的条件令今世学者羡慕，那就是对政治有一份触及肉体更触及灵魂的真切感受。语云学而优则仕，揭示了秦汉以降传统中国政学合一的本质，在此背景下的传统士人对于政治决不如今人这样易走极端。要不被接受，要不被排斥，这是现代社会知识分子的极端感受；传统士人不然。他们无往不生活在与政治共存亡的暧昧之中。政治的规条是儒家定的，士人是读儒书长大认同儒家价值观的，君臣冲突也大部分发生在儒学框架之内，因此，士人或会反对具体的统治者，但决不会反对抽象的统治格局。譬如，范文程会帮助皇太极、多尔衮谋夺明代之天下，但也是他，极力怂恿清廷恢复汉、唐的制度。俏皮话所谓“跪着造反”，说的就是这个意思。孟森生活在“鼎革”之际，清末与民初，乍一看，恍若换了人间。但是，从政治运作的基本面进行判断，在北伐成功以前，清代与民国的上层政治并无本质差异。以此，孟森虽在民国时期参与政治，其实，他已领会了民国前的政治；何况他还在清代生活了四十余年。以此，他在政治、制度层面解释国史取得成就，与他的从政有年大有干系。
当然，兼具才、学、识才是真史家。孟森之才，可以从政；孟森之学，并蓄新旧；孟森之识，究在何处？严格的说，要领略孟森的史识，只有读他的书，三言两语的书评根本作不了介绍，因为，史识往往以“片语解纷”的形式出现，若非先看了论据、证明，若非先置身于“语境”，单独把一两句话提炼出来，那不是什么史识，那是口号和广告语。但鄙人还是要举个例，因为正是这个判断让晚辈在十几年前读到了心史先生的好处，不忍不与读者分享。
文章题目《丁香花》，是“辨伪”之作，欲辨之伪，乃是当时哄传龚自珍与绘贝勒夫人顾春的“婚外恋”。流言即以1839年自珍至北京接眷南下而自己不进京城为借口，说他正因为害怕贝勒报复而不敢进城。孟森将其他有涉暧昧的举证破除得一干二净，本可宣告辨伪成功，但他偏要加一笔，解释自珍何以不入北京。当然，他并无自珍亲供，亦即没有确证说明自珍何以如此。然他偏要说：“定公(自珍号定庵)清兴所至，原难以常理论”。一般治史者不会用“清兴所至”解释史事，因为这不“科学”，也不“专业”。孟森何尝不知？却偏要说，偏要留下“破绽”，这是为什么？这是因为他自信能“同情地理解”龚自珍。
习礼读律，最高境界不是读懂文字，而是认识昔人制律设礼的深意。治史之境亦然。不明白古人的心曲，说不清他的事迹；不理解古人的性情，则断不了他的出处。实证、考据当然是治史的唯一手段，但是，绝非目的。史料并不是史学。史学是人学，是心学。
当然，一味用心揣摩，乃至曲解史事，那不是史学，更不是孟森之史学。“清兴所至”的判断，原非人人下得的。
