王国维
读张广达《王国维的西学和国学》（载《中国学术》第十六辑）。他试图解释这样两个问题：
以先生横绝一世的非凡才智，在学术研究上能够卓有成效的借鉴西方近代理性思维，将其运用于梳理学统遗产，为什么就不能同样参照西方“理论哲学”和启蒙思想，同样的也对中国的道统和政统遗产哪怕略略有所质疑、略略有所分析、略略有所商榷？一位学术上如此具有自主性善于开拓的巨擘，怎么在思想感情上会是如此拘谨的恪守陈规旧矩者（conformist），以至于把两千馀年帝制下形成的意识形态的某些符号规范当成了自己的终极关怀（ultimate concern），错位一至于此？
答案是什么呢？曰：
成长和生活在中国语境中的王国维，虽然研究过西学，但是舶来的西方理性思维方式对他的影响究竟日浅，不足以促使他明确作出如下区别：何者是个人修身层次上的道德规范；何者是仁者为怀层次的人间关怀；何者是专制制度的意识形态层次上的符号系统。简言之，受传统文化全面浸润熏陶的王国维，思想感情犹如一张磁碟，被传统所格式化（formatted）了。
案。三层次说，很机警。似可破除王氏所谓可爱者不可信可信者不可爱的迷思。但是否一旦明白三个层次的区别，王氏将会做出另外的选择与取舍？似又难言。因为王氏自己说了，“余知真理，而余又爱其谬误”。他不是一张磁碟。
又，此文有个小错误。128页，“沈曾植在总理各国事务衙门的译署供职”；总理衙门简称总署，又称译署。译署并不是总理衙门的下设机构。
文章好，评论得也好。
关于“是否一旦明白三个层次的区别，王氏将会做出另外的选择与取舍”，我想张氏的说法已经提示答案了。
值得注意的是这句“受传统文化全面浸润熏陶”。即使王国维明白了三个层次的区别，可是他未曾全面浸润在西学思想中，也不可能全面浸润在西方的价值体系中，所以仅仅停留在“明白”的层面上是于事无补的。当最重大的事情需要抉择时，那“明白”就变得无力了，“传统”的巨大力量就体现出来了。
王氏如此，我们又何尝不是如此？
安身立命而已。有时候想想，做了专制的殉葬，与作了民主的先驱，在本人来说，都是为理想献身，差别不大。即在观者眼里，尽有不同，却也要分时间场合才好判断高下。终是与世相推，没个准话。
张先生揭示的三层次，窃谓真可取者有二，即个人修身层次上的道德规范以及仁者为怀层次的人间关怀。能在这两个方面“上了层次”，意识形态符号系统云云，究是过眼烟云，不足为评断的标准。
人固不能与势相抗。但也不是说顺势而行就是做人。
還應補充一句。去國與自殺，都是莫大抉擇。這篇文章，除了述學，別有抒情的成分。作者痛心于王氏之不悟，其言激切，幾乎犯了取消語境苛責前賢的大忌，究其實，或不免慨嘆時事，自傷懷抱。
