同治十年，王闿运进京会试。他的朋友多，朋友的朋友更多，以此，在试事之馀参加的吃请也很多。据《湘绮楼日记》，在此期间，几乎宴饮无虚日。然请客吃饭没什么稀奇，不值得专文记叙，只因他们买单的方式比较奇怪，才有记一笔的价值。
这年六月二十七日，许振祎发帖子请他赴宴，与会者共计八人，其中，以闿运等三人为“梦神”，以许振祎、谭继洵等五人为“展梦”。对闿运来说，这次宴会就叫“吃梦”。吃饭就吃饭，什么叫“吃梦”？且不管吃什么，都要买单，依常理，许氏招客，自应由他买单。“梦神”二字，或可猜测为贵宾，即闿运等三人毋庸掏钱；而许氏与其他四人具有“展梦”的资格，那么，是不是说，由“展梦”者AA不成？理有或然，文无确证，梦到底如何吃法，终归不知。余心不觉梦梦矣。
后来，读到吴仰贤《小匏庵诗话》，才算解开这个谜团。其书云，在北京参加乡、会试的士子们，在发榜之前，每有聚餐，与会者都不用带钱包，带上嘴就行（“不携杖头钱”），胡吃海喝完毕，拍屁股走人。买单的事谁负责？待到发榜，由中了举人、进士的与宴者负责。因为在吃的过程中大家都不知道这是“吃”谁的请，而大家又都“梦”想这桌能由自己买单，所以，这就叫“吃梦”。又因为其时个人信用体系的建设不够完善，或不免有上了榜却逃单的人，于是，大家在与宴者中挑出一或几个不参加本科考试的人，让他们作“酒监”，此即所谓“梦神”。诗曰：“逐鹿隍中手斫之，楼头行炙客传卮，鸡虫得失须臾事，好趁黄粱未熟时”；黄粱一梦的典故用到此处，十分恰当。盖黄粱熟了，梦也醒了，中榜的喜，落榜的悲，该干嘛干嘛，不一定还有聚首碰杯的兴味；就应趁这黄梁未熟之时，你有压力，我有压力，各位打着“吃梦”的幌子，在酒楼舒缓这份压力。一般情况下，“梦神”不用买单，故“咸乐为之”。只是，倘若手气不好，坐到一桌全军尽墨的席上，则出钱人人有份，“虽梦神不得免焉”。故又有诗云：“莫羡监筵作梦神，梦神也是梦中身”。
“吃梦”首倡于何时？闿运在同治末年“吃梦”，吴仰贤与他是同代人，此外未见更早的记载，或可据此断为清代“同治中兴”以后。光绪时，此风大盛，如宝廷《揭晓前一日与文镜寰满敬之清阶平饮酒》云：“今日固是梦（自注：榜前宴会俗谓之吃梦），明日岂遂醒。人生天地间，终身与梦等。有酒且畅饮，莫负明月影。功名果何物。无妨心暂冷。梦中须觅乐。百岁原俄顷”；虽有冷眼“吃梦”之嫌，究是诗人爱做惊人语，兼且“欢愉之辞难工”，无足怪也，然可证光绪时此风之盛。而沈钦韩《除夕效白乐天何处难忘酒》云：“此时非吃梦。无力送斜晖”。自注：“会榜未出前，聚朋市饮，俟得第者偿，谓之吃梦”；由此可知“吃梦”的时间，或就订在发榜的当天。因填榜都在夜里，故“吃梦”者从晚饭开始，可以一直吃到消夜时分，等到榜单传来，即行当场买单。
再回到开头。许振祎等五人，在当时已成进士，业为命官，不用再等考试放榜，怎么还聚会“吃梦”？据胡思敬《跋天宁寺食梦图》，凡有望成为各省考官的，在圣旨钦点以前，也聚在一起“吃梦”。以此推想，许振祎等人所吃之“梦”，或是高官与美差。
昨阅报，知今科高考学子有于试后即结队成群去KTV唱通宵者，窃谓娱乐形式虽异，在买单的事上倒不妨借鉴前辈的做法，可做一场“唱梦”。既尽兴，又有趣，且相对保证经济上的公平，堪称多赢。只是，扩招以来，上榜者太多，想不读大学也难，于是，即用古法，恐最终亦只是AA之局矣。
