格萨尔·关？

民国廿九年夏，第五世嘉木样活佛（汉名黄正光）自拉萨归来，由拉卜楞保安司令部司令黄正清（藏名罗桑泽旺，是活佛的大哥，1949年後官至甘肃省副省长）率队往迎。其时，筹建拉卜楞寺女子小学的藏学家于式玉女士，日夜劳作之馀，想“借这机会放松一下”，遂加入迎候活佛的队伍。六月二十日，迎候队伍行至黄河边的卓格尼玛滩（今属甘肃玛曲县），因活佛一行程路耽搁，众人在此扎帐休整，待了九天。在此期间，于女士甚觉“无聊”，“只有听司令讲些汉、藏相通的故事，才是解闷的唯一资料”，司令所讲故事予她以最深刻印象的，则是“藏人也有部《三国演义》”。据云，《演义》人物中最受尊崇的是关羽，尤其在西康地区，藏民每于饮茶时祝告：“骑着赤兔马，日行千里路，察人间善恶的关老爷，请来喝茶！”藏民称关羽为“格萨尔”，称关夫人为“珠莫”——“若说某一个女人像珠莫，那是恭维到极点的话”（《到黄河曲迎接嘉木样活佛日记》）。
于女士的哥哥于道泉先生也是藏学家，亦曾述及此事，云：“西藏有最流行之长篇小说，名曰《盖撒故事》，据云盖撒系一蒙古国王，乃观自在之化身。但中原之关帝在西藏皆称为盖撒。即西藏故事中所描写之盖撒王亦与《三国演义》中之关公相仿佛。且盖撒之侍者二人，亦酷似周仓与关平。大概自汉晋以来关羽之故事流行中原甚多，一部分为中原文人所掇拾附会，乃成《三国演义》等书；一部分传入西藏，在西藏之民间传说中幾经变化後复为西藏文人所掇拾附会，乃成《盖撒故事》”。其时，于先生尚未读过《盖撒故事》，所作推想，合乎常情（《达赖喇嘛于根敦珠巴以前之转生》）。
吾有一友尝游拉萨，回来後兴奋的说，你知道吗，藏地也有关帝庙，藏语叫“格萨拉康”，拉康是庙，格萨就是格萨尔王，而史诗《格萨尔王传》正是关羽故事的西藏版，真是太有趣了！我说，还不够有趣，十九世纪有英国旅行家说格萨尔是罗马恺撒大帝“在东方的名字”，更有趣咧。试想，格萨尔、盖撒、凯撒与关，略作谐音，不就是同名异呼么？吾友油然而惑，问，真有这么神奇？答曰，都是附会的错，格萨尔只是藏地英雄，与关羽、凯撒无关。
其实，在于氏兄妹文章发表後不久，民族史学家任乃强先生写了一篇《“藏三国”的初步研究》（1944），即以文献与口碑证据破除了格萨尔是关羽的讹言。他说，格萨尔即《宋史吐蕃传》中的“唃厮罗”，是林国国王，国境辖今四川西北及青海一部分，与西夏国接壤。他一生的事业，可概括为“连中原（宋朝）以拒西夏”。《格萨尔》史诗便是根据他的文治武功演义而成。任先生认为《格萨尔》虽非藏版《三国演义》，然仅论文字优美、设想诡奇与诙谐幽默，决不输与汉地的古典文学名著。即如开篇，叙述一位老妇弃家朝佛，不幸中道而死，其媳由此怨诟佛法，发愿转世为魔以摧毁佛法。她的愿力甚大，终于生下三个魔子（暗喻与格萨尔作战的各族），诸天神佛紧急会商，群推一佛下凡护法，此即未来的格萨尔王。任先生译出西康版（此书被格鲁派列为禁书，只能以口传手抄的方式传播，故版本甚多）第一段，云：
“夕阳将坠，草原里一望苍茫，老太婆驱遣她的羊群，听它们不规则的前进，有似一顷柔浪，滚滚向前移转。转过浅冈，望见山侧金碧辉煌的佛寺，反映夕阳，显得分外的鲜艳华美，仿佛有万道毫光，非常锐利的排开宇宙的阴霾，把她微弱而愉快的心脏，很亲蜜甜美的把握住。她忘记了羊群，不知不觉下拜了”。
读来只觉情致如绘，适如任先生所谓：“纵不解藏文，但聆此意，亦当感其不凡”。
